Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

When many people consider mental health treatment, they think it’s an all-or-none solution — go to complete inpatient care or try to manage the day-to-day on your own. However, people like you or your loved ones may not be able to take a break from their lives for the weeks or months needed to stay at a treatment facility full-time. You may not even want to.

At Diamond House, we understand that a total inpatient experience is not for everyone. You need a treatment that’s as unique as you and the conditions you’re managing. That’s why our state-of-the-art facility offers a range of treatment modalities and stay programs. Our goal is to help you find new ways to manage your mental health without taking away from your life.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program for Mental Health

Our mental health facility offers two types of outpatient treatment:

  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): In an IOP, a client visits our treatment center three to four times a week. During each visit, they’ll go through a few hours of therapy with our Master’s-level therapists and meet with a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner when necessary. IOP allows the least amount of interruption in one’s daily life. We provide both virtual IOP and evening IOP options.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Our PHP is a step up from the IOP. With this program, participants come into our facility every weekday for daytime treatment. In the evenings and on weekends, clients are free to return to their normal lives and maintain their responsibilities.

IOP generally offers time for one-on-one treatment and psychiatric care, along with group therapy. PHP allows us to offer our full range of therapies and services, including:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT encourages participants to recognize negative thought patterns and explore coping strategies to change or move past that mindset.
  • Trauma therapy: Trauma therapy gives clients a safe space to explore past experiences which have negatively impacted their lives and learn to recognize and deal with intrusive or triggering memories and thoughts.
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy: EMDR can work for a range of diagnoses but is often most helpful for trauma-based mental illness. This treatment involves clients making repetitive eye movements while discussing their concerns, allowing them to reprocess these issues and move forward with their lives.
  • Art therapy: Art therapy lets participants explore new, relaxing ways of expressing themselves. Art therapy has proven to be an effective form of communication for some people when other therapies fall short.
  • Group therapy: Group therapy often incorporates many therapeutic modalities into sessions. The main difference is that clients participate in the sessions together, allowing them to share their experiences and discuss them with people who may relate. Many group therapy participants feel this option makes them feel less alone and lets them make supportive connections that help them throughout their entire time in the PHP.

What Is a PHP in Mental Health Good For?

Diamond House’s Partial Hospitalization Program has worked for clients with all kinds of mental health diagnoses, including depression, anxiety, OCD, schizophrenia, and anger issues. While many people may see it as the ideal alternative to an inpatient treatment program, you should fit some of these criteria to be a good candidate:

  • You can safely maintain some independence: Though you’ll spend your weekdays at our facility, most of your time is still yours to use as you see fit. We want to ensure you aren’t a danger to yourself or others before we approve you for PHP.
  • You have already completed an inpatient program: PHPs and IOPs are often stepping stones between inpatient treatment and the “real world.” Many people try them out before committing to an inpatient program. Likewise, when people are released from their inpatient program, it can take time to transition back into their regular routine. A PHP can help ease this transition, giving them the chance to incorporate their new skills into everyday routines and get support from professionals simultaneously.
  • You have a support system and motivation to receive treatment: While we strive to provide the support you need while you’re in our program, having a strong support network outside of the facility can make a world of difference. Having family, friends and loved ones who want to help you improve your mental health can help you stay motivated in treatments, let you discuss what you’ve learned after a long day and try out new coping skills in real-time.

How Long Does the PHP Last?

Our team consists of medically approved professionals who are passionate about mental health care. We know that the road to recovery looks different for everyone, and there’s no timeline for healing. Because of that, there’s no set time period for our partial hospitalization program in California. Some people participate in it for a week, while others stay for over a month to learn the tools they need to succeed.

In general, though, most people see enough improvement to transition out of the partial hospitalization program within two to three weeks. From there, most people are stable enough to return to their regular routine. However, others may spend some time in our IOP after PHP.
